The History of Any Baby Can

At Any Baby Can, we believe that all children can reach their potential through education, therapy and family support services. Each year, the agency serves more than 6,000 of the youngest, sickest, and poorest children and their families in the Central Texas area. These children face a number of challenges to their well-being, including special health care needs, developmental delays, the danger of being abused or neglected, poverty, and the risk of not succeeding in school. The agency supports families and children with a continuum of evidence based best practices including both prevention and intervention strategies, overlaid with advocacy and support.  Most intensive, individualized services are provided in the home, a proven effective method for sustained positive changes.  The agency also provides center and community-based family literacy, tutoring, parenting education, and childbirth classes.

Any Baby Can Child and Family Resource Center has served Austin/Travis County and its surrounding communities since 1979 as a premiere, comprehensive family service organization.  Any Baby Can's mission is to ensure that all children reach their potential through education, therapy, and family support services.  Each year, Any Baby Can brings help and hope to more than 6,000 of Austin's youngest, sickest, and poorest children.

CEDEN (Center for Development, Education, and Nutrition) Family Resource Center began providing Austin with comprehensive services in 1979 to promote and strengthen families in need of prenatal, early childhood, and parenting education.  The agency provided services to improve birth outcomes, prevent and reverse developmental delays, increase positive parenting behaviors, reduce injuries, and ensure timely immunizations.  CEDEN primarily served low socio-economic staus families, parents, and their children ranging from birth to five years who were, or were at risk of becoming developmentally delayed.

In 1992, Any Baby Can of Austin began serving the community after the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) conducted a needs assessment in Austin and determined that a significant population of children with special needs resided in the area.  DSHS provided funding to replicate the efforts of the highly successful Any Baby Can, an agency founded in San Antonio in 1982.  Programming was designed to "save the child without losing the family" by improving access to services and health care, and providing support and advocacy for families of children with special needs.

Seven years ago, CEDEN Family Resource Center and Any Baby Can of Austin merged, forming Any Baby Can Child and Family Resource Center.  In November, 2003, the Any Baby Can family welcomed a new member, the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation of the Austin Area.  Founded in 1988 as a grassroots, parent-driven nonprofit, Candlelighters assisted children and families battling childhood cancer.  As the number of families seeking services grew, the organization evolved into a combined effort between professional social workers and parent/mentor programs to help families cope with the challenges of having a child with cancer.

In July of 2008, Any Baby Can welcomed Children’s Hearing Aid Texas (CHAT) which provides auditory services and hearing aids for children in Central Texas with audiological needs who have no financial alternatives to meet those needs. CHAT was founded on the belief that hearing aids are essential for the development of cognitive and social skills in infants and children with hearing loss. CHAT was established in 2003 and incubated by the Austin Community Foundation under their 501 (c) (3) status until 2008, when Any Baby Can “adopted” CHAT.

By building on their individual traditions of quality community service while combining their experiences and resources, Any Baby Can Child and Family Resource Center has expanded the impact and range of all three original agencies for the good of families in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Caldwell and Bastrop Counties.
